Please advise me how to do the registration of my marriage & what are the documents i need to submit in portugal embassy.

    thank you

    camilo fernandes

  11. Hello, Camilo. I’m not quite sure how they process such request. It’s better to check directly with the embassy, either via phone or personal visit.

  12. Hi, Jamel. Having a friend in Portugal might ease the visa processing. But there are more requirements than that, like an international insurance plan, a healthy bank statement,etc.. Visitors are required to hold proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay and documents required for their next destination.Certain Visa regulations apply as follows: Visitors not holding return/onward tickets could be refused entry.

  13. i want to know .weather you accept documents for marriage registration and kids birth registration as well

  73. Just to thank the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE for the assistance given to me and my family in applying for the Portuguese Identity Cards. Will visit them soon once it comes through. The lady at the counter is very helpful and kind in answering any queries.

  74. To those who would like to apply for a BI. You have to submit the following documents: 1. Original and copy of your birth certificate (assento de nascimento) 2. Passport copies – first, last and residence stamped pages (if Indian passport) 3. original and copy of marriage certificate (assento de casamento) 4. 3 photos with white background and 5. Process fees of 50 UAE Dirhams (some change will be given back)
You will be given a draft form to fill from the birth certificate. The lady will check and re-check the contents on the draft and then she will given you the original form which you have to fill without any mistakes – if any mistakes are make it will be rejected so be careful when writing. Hand over the original along with the draft to the lady for checking. If OK she will accept and will given a receipt. You will be called after 45 days to 60 days to colect the BI. Once the BI is issued you have to take an appointment to apply for the passport which is issued after 3 – 5 days. Appointment is given only in the afternoons. This the information I got personally when I visited the Embassy with my family last week. I am a resident of Bahrain.

  75. Mariano Da Silva

    August 28, 2012 — 10:42 am

I need information regarding time taken to get the BI after submitting the required documents. Please advise if anyone is aware of this procedure

  76. Hello, Domnic.
So kind of you to share these info.
    Cheers,
    Issa

  77. Mariano Da Silva, if you had read my mail carefully you would have got the answer to your question. Usually it takes 45 to 60 days but sometimes more depending on their issuing office in Portugal but you need to call the office after 3 pm (UAE time) but before 5 pm and give them the reference number to check if it has arrived from Portugal. All BIs are issued in Portugal so it will take time but passports are issued at the Embassy after fulfilling some requirements personally. Hope this mail answers your question.

  78. Hello Issa.

I recently got my B.I. from Abu Dhabi Consulate. How do I proceed with the application for obtaining Portuguese Passport. What documents are required, what is the time factor and the fees involved.

    Hi Dominic!

Thanks! Your elaborate information is indeed very helpful. Plan to visit the consulate shortly. Hence have one question incase you have the answer it will be helpful, does my wife and son have to come along with me or can their application for BI & passport be processed without they being be present at the consulate?

    Thanks once again.

  80. I have a uncle who works in Oman and he want to come to Abu Dhabi to apply for his BI. Is it fine to visit UAE on a ‘Visit Visa’ and can he still apply for the same? Or, is it necessary to have ‘Resident visa’? I will highly appreciate for your response. Thank you.

  83. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 4, 2012 — 5:23 am

    Mr. Cyril Cardozo,
To apply for the Portuguese Passport you have to take an appointment from the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It can be done only after 3 pm. You have to be present personally with your BI. The necessary procedure will be done there like taking finger print, height (it is done even when applying for the BI). Fees I do not know how much they charge. The passport is issued in 4 to 5 days as per the lady at the counter said. Hope this answers your question.

  84. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 4, 2012 — 5:27 am

    Mr. Constancio Fernandes
You cannot apply for the BIs for your wife and son without their presence. They have to be there as their finger prints and heights are taken. If you are in the UAE with your wife and son then it is easy for you to go with them and get the work done without any problems. Hope this answers your question.

  85. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 4, 2012 — 5:35 am

    Mr. Joaquim
You can inquire about the Portuguese translation at the counter of the Portuguese Embassy, Abu Dhabi. The lady at the counter will recommend you a person. Make sure all the name spellings and other contents of the documents are in order. As you know one alphabet mistake you need to run up and down to get the correction done so be careful. All the best. Rest you can follow my comments above.

  86. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 4, 2012 — 5:40 am

    Mr. Agnelo Gonsalves,
Your uncle can definitely visit the UAE and apply for the BI provided all the documents are in order (check my earlier comments above). If all documents are in order then he will take only a day to apply for the BI. I also visited the UAE from Bahrain and got the work done so no problems in your uncle’s visit as long as there is no Portuguese Embassy/Consulate/Representative in Oman.

  87. Dear Issa

    Wonderful site Issa.. Thank you
For Dominic, I was at the Port Embassy in AD back in mid May ’12 when I submitted the birth certs of my kids born in Kuwait. I have my birth and my marriage directly done from Lisbon. Early Sept. now and I am clueless as to what is happening with the paperwork. Been trying to call the embassy for the past two weeks now with absolutely no one answering the phone. Been emailing them ever since and still no reply. Any Clues ? Is the Portuguese Embassy on an extended holiday ?
Was wondering, later on as a Portuguese Citizen.. If in case of an emergency, who am I supposed to contact for consular assistance ?

  88. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 4, 2012 — 9:08 am

    Mr. Antonio,
The lady at the counter of the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE told me that they usually do not attend phone calls as they are very busy and I am a witness to the busy situation at the Embassy as many people come to the Embassy for personal and official work. You will have to contact them only after 3 pm and if, you are in the UAE then it would be better to go personally and find about your work. As for me I had to fly from Bahrain with a confirmed reply from one of the Embassy diplomatic staff that I could come there and get my work processed otherwise I had to fly to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. From Riyadh all your papers are sent to and received back through DHL provided your documents are in order (no hassles and all work is done within a week) but in Abu Dhabi it is not the same. You have to present all documents personally. Well, contacting some one in case of emergency – I have no comments but I pray that your work is done as soon as possible and Good Luck for the future. God Bless.

  89. Dear Mr. Dominic
Thank you for your quick response. I’ve tried calling in the afternoons and still did not get any answer to my calls. In any case, I would just like to clarify. If I submit my children’s papers at the Port Embassy in AUD, how long would it take them to register the births in Lisbon ? My papers were submitted on the 3rd of May to be exact. The only thing is that I did not get any receipt or anything of that sort after submission. They said that they would get back to me. I live in Kuwait and going to Abu Dhabi would not be a problem provided I have something concrete to go back to. Is the embassy in Saudi Arabia still operational ? I heard that operations were shifted to Abu Dhabi.

    Dear Mr. Antonio,
You are welcome for any queries. I have been into this sort of Portuguese Passport process since 2004 and have gained much experience.
As you mentioned that you have submitted your papers on 3 May – where? through whom? If you have the answers let me know but be clear in the following information.
You cannot process your children’s papers as long as your birth and marriage are registered in Portugal and in return you will get original birth and marriage certificates (ie. assento de nascimento and casamento). Without these two certificates you cannot prove to the officials that they are your legal chidlren.
Portuguese Embassy in Riyadh is very much in operation. I had all my documents translated and attested there but went to Abu Dhabi to apply for the BIs which were accepted.
I can assist you in giving the addresses of both Portuguese embassies, their contact numbers and the person in Riyadh who looks after these work. I can also give you a lawyer in Portugal who did my work within 2 years ie My father-in-law’s birth, his marriage, my wife’s birth, our marriage and lastly my children’s births. Every one were amazed by our process progress where some people have been still waiting for their process.
Number is 0096614826964 Mr. Mohd Shaheen
    Have a nice day!

  91. Dear Mr. Dominic

Sincerely appreciate all your information. You have really explained well.

    Hi Dominic,

Thanks for the response. Yes I am based with my family in Dubai so shall go directly to the consulate. Am sure your information will help a lot of people who find it difficult to find the right channel to process their papers. As after after 1st unlucky try where we were mislead, we got most papers completed through a proper lawyer (similar to your case) all registration in 15 months pending now my son BI and passport. Since your wife is already a Portuguese citizen do you know how to process your papers for the passport.
    Have a Nice day!!

  93. Dear Issa,
I need to attest the arabic birth certificate of my kids born in Kuwait. its already attested by Kuwait foreign affairs. do i need to translate it first to Portuguese or English to get it attested in Portuguese consulate Abu Dhabi? pls check and Reply

  94. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 9, 2012 — 4:01 am

    Dear Savio,
Please note any document issued in a foreign language has to be attested at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in your case in Kuwait – as you did it) and sent for translation into Portuguese (not English) as it is for the Portuguese Government. If you want it to be translated into English then it will be for yourself to know the contents of the certificate. You can get it done at the Portuguese Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia without flying to Riyadh as their work is all done through DHL provided all your documents are in order and error free. Hope this will help you.

    September 9, 2012 — 4:08 am

    Dear Constancio,
To apply for the Portuguese Passpsort all you need is the BI and nothing else. This is the infomation I was given. I would recommend that you carry all your Portugese original documents to be on safer side, few photos, moneeeeeeeeeeey (don’t forget). They will take your height and finger print. That is all required. I know in Goa they need a lot. For your son’s BI refer to my mails above. Have a nice day!

  96. Dear Domnic

    Thanks a lot

  97. Dear Issa,
Many thanks for your response to my earlier question.
Please advise, I have already received my original “Assento de Nascimento” from Portugal recently Now I am planning to fly to Abu Dhabi from Oman to get my BI ? Is it necessary that I have to submit my Original marriage certificate (Assento de Nascimento) and a copy to the Portuguese Embassy to obtain it.

    Thanks

  98. Dear Sir,

I had one clarification, My wife already got her Assento de Nascimento, BI and her portuguese passport. Our marriage documents are still pending attestation in india (Portuguese embassy). Upon enquiry they said we can go ahead and apply for Assento de Nascimento for my children even before our marriage can be registered as my wife is already a portuguese national. They collected my wife BI copy, her Assento de Nascimento copy, Passport copy for my her and the kids along with birth certificate with portuguese translation of the same. my doubt can it be done this way?

secondly can you please provide me with the contact number of that reliable lawyer in portugal who did your work in 2 years.

    regards

    September 16, 2012 — 7:49 am

    Dear Mr. Mariano Da Silva,
NO! There is no need to present your marriage certificate (assento de casamento). Only your original birth certificate (assento de nascimento) and a copy of it is needed. The lady at the counter will check your original and copy and then return your original back. (refer to my previous mails for any more queries. All the best

  101. Hello,
i just need information. my birth is registered and all the documentation was done from Goa- India. Can i do the process of BI card from Abu Dhabi
    Please advise the requirements
    Thanks
    Willy

  102. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 17, 2012 — 8:57 am

    Mr. Willy,
You can apply, provided you have the original birth certificate (assento de nascimento).
Go to older comments of mine and you will get all the proper information on the requirements when applying for your BI.
If you are married make sure you get your marriage registered first, because on the BI there is a requirement to mention if married or unmarried or otherwise. If you are married and your marriage is registered then it will be good to apply for your children in future.
Hope you got the point. Bye and good luck.

    Dear Dominic Veigas
My mother is born and residing in Goa. She was born in the year 1951. Is it possible for her to apply for the Portuguese Passport at the Abu Dhabi Portuguese embassy. If yes what is the procedure.

    Thanks & Regards

    September 18, 2012 — 9:59 am

    Dear Rina,
She cannot process her documents outside Goa. She has to get it done at the Portuguese Consulate in Goa. All Indian documents have to be processed in India itself and not outside India. Hope you got the point.

  105. Dear Mr Domnic Veigas

  106. Hello Domnic Savio Viegas,

I want to start the procedures for my portugues passport. My mother does not have hers and she lives in Goa. So I will have to start doing her process first. I have all her documents -Birth, marraige in Portugues and English. I live in Dubai, Is it possible for me to start the procedure for my mother and then mine in Abu Dhabi.

    September 20, 2012 — 6:42 am

    Hi Ruth,
Better late than never. If your documents are from Goa then you cannot process them from Abu Dhabi. You have to start doing it in Goa itself as there are many procedures you have to fulfil. First you have to collect documents to register your mother’s birth and she has to have a document issued during the Portuguese rule. Do you have it?

  109. Hi Domnic,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have collected all my mothers documents, I had contacted an advocate in Goa, He gave me all the requirements. So I got all of them, the portuguese and English birth and marraige, I have carried
them to Dubai with me to see if we could do it in Abu Dhabi, as we are here most of the time.

    Regards
    Ruth

    September 20, 2012 — 1:41 pm

    Dear Domnic,

I reside in Dubai. My Registration of birth was recently completed. I am married living with my wife and one daughter here in Dubai. My wife is not eligible for the process due to many reasons though she is Goan. However, is it more prudent to get our marriage registered first before applying for BI? or can it be done latter after getting the BI? Is it an issue if I register my marriage later? What documents would I require to get my BI? FYI, I was married in India.

    Thanks

  111. Hi Ruth,

if you have your mother’s documents attested by Portuguese consulate in Goa, then you may be able to send them to Portugal directly from your side. For free advice you can contact S. Fernandes sfdes65@excite.com
who had helped me in similar way, provided you have all the required documentation

  112. Dear Dominic
My husband got the marriage all done only he has to get passport can he collect it from Abu dhabi or he has to go to Portugal, please advise if he can go. First he registered it from the lawyer in goa and he has done in Portugal all registration let me know if he can go from Kuwait to Abu dhabi

  113. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 23, 2012 — 6:26 am

    Dear Nancy,
If your husband got the marriage registered in Portugal excellent. Did he apply for the BI? First apply for the BI and then apply for the Passport. You can apply for the BI and Passport at the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Make sure he has the original birth and marriage certificates (assento de nascimento and casamento). He will need them when applying for the BI.

  114. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 23, 2012 — 6:42 am

    Mr. Brian,
Your birth is registered you said – good. Do you have the original birth certificate (assento de nascimento)? It is wise to register your marriage first before applying for BI. Now register your marriage. You will need the following:
    1. Your original assento de nascimento
    2. Your wife’s original birth certificate
    3. Her original and copies of the passport pages
    4. Marriage certificates from Civil and Church (if certificates are issued in Goa then do the needful in Goa itself like attestation at the various Govt. offices, Portuguese translation and attestation at the Consulate and then send to Portugal either personally or through a lawyer or through the Consulate-whichever way you did your birth)
Once your marriage is done then you can apply for your daughter’s birth which will not take much time.
Being a Goan does not entitle you for the process provided you fulfil all the necessary requirements. Once your marriage is registered your wife is automatically registered in the system but not entitled for a BI or Passport now. May be in future after certain years.

  115. I have to go for my son attestation
what do i need from Kuwait
    english translation and portuguese transalation
both to be attested in ministry of foreign affairs
    pls advise

  116. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 25, 2012 — 9:47 am

    Hi Nancy,
To get your son’s birth certificate to be attested at the Portuguese Embassy either in Riyadh or Abu Dhabi you need to do the following:
    1. Get a fresh birth certificate (not more than 6 months old).
    2. Attest it at the Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
    3. Send the attested birth certificate along with his original passport and passport copies, copies father’s birth and marriage (assento de nascimento and casamento) certificates to either Riyadh or Abu Dhabi. To Abu Dhabi you will have to go personally but to Riyadh you can send the documents for translation into Portuguese and attestation through DHL. DHL handles embassy documents.
If the birth certificate is in English or Arabic it has to be translated in to Portuguese and it is done at the Portuguese embassy in Riyadh or Abu Dhabi. I got all my documents done from Riyadh through DHL. I recommend since you are in Kuwait send it to Riyadh. For further details email me for address and contact No. and person.

  117. Hi
I need some details on applications for a portuguese passport. I am from India (Goa) . My dad was born in 1941 and mom in 1954. My dad had a portuguese pasport however it is expired as of the moment. He will renew it from Goa and my mom will apply hers from Goa. I now need to know is that if I need to apply for a portuguese passport is it possible that I can apply for it living here in Dubai and if I can apply from here what is the procedure to be followed and what are the documents that I’ll need to start the processing.
If I can get all the details then atleast I can apply for one from here.
    Awaiting you reply.

  118. hi Domnic,
I called Riyadh, they told me that Kuwait is not under them anymore. Kuwait residents should contact only Abu
dhabi embassy for any consular work.

  119. Dear Sir/ Madam,

    Best of Luck

  121. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 26, 2012 — 4:41 am

    Hi Savio,
Thanks for the information. You will have to then process all your documents through Abu Dhabi.
    Best of Luck.

  122. Domnic Savio Viegas

    September 26, 2012 — 4:50 am

    Hi Vianey,
If your father is holding an expired Portuguese Passport then make sure the Consulate in Goa renews it first. Does your father/mother have their Original Portuguese Birth and Marriage certificates (Assento de nascimento and casamento) issued from Portugal?
If yes, it will be easy for your process provided your parents names are correctly spelled in your birth certificate and passport.
Where were you born? In India or outside India? In India then you will have to get all your documents done in Goa itself and if outside India then you can do it through Abu Dhabi.
Your first priority is to check the first part of this mail.

  123. I am an Indian Passport Holder and would be travelling from Casablanca to Lisbon via Royal Air Maroc AT-980 and would be transiting to travel further to Praia via TP 213 (Lisbon- Praia) . You cannot process your work in a foreign country if the documents are issued in Goa, India. You have to fulfil certain requirements which is a must so you have to go to Goa, meet the lawyer and present to him all documents needed.

  133. Domnic Savio Viegas

    October 2, 2012 — 5:24 am

    Mr. Noronha,
Depending where you were married? In Goa or outside Goa (within India) or outside India?
If in Goa or outside Goa (within India) then you will have to get your documents done through the Portuguese Consulate in Goa.
To register your marriage you need the following documents:
    1. Your original birth certificate (assento de nascimento) and it’s copy – which you said you have got registered and must be having the original copy
    2. Your wife’s orignal fresh birth certificate from Dubai’s Ministry of Health. (check below the process to get it done)
    3. Original and Indian passport copies of the relevant pages with her full details and the last page with your name and her parent’s names (made sure the names are correct in her birth, marriage certificates and passport.
    4. Marriage certificates (civil and church)

For No. 2 above- apply for a fresh birth certificate from the Ministry of Health from Dubai, UAE.
    – take it to the Dubai, Ministry of Foreign Affairs for attestation
    – take it to the Portuguese Consulate in Abu Dhabi for translation into Portuguese and attestation

Now, I want to know where you got married? Depending on that I can guide you.

Apply for your BI only after your marriage is registered in Portugal and you get the original Assento de casamento.

Hope it is clear from my side. Good luck

  134. I have got my BI can I apply for my Portuguese Passport in Abu Dhabi. How long will it take to get the passport. Can I have dual passports. Presently holding Indian Passport. Also would like to know about OCI.

    Thanks

  135. Domnic Savio Viegas

    October 3, 2012 — 8:24 am

    Hi Maria,
Congratulations! Yes, you can apply for the Portuguese Passport in Abu Dhabi, UAE but you have to take an appointment for it and once you apply, within a week you will get the Passport.
Portuguese government allows dual passports but Indian government does not allow so you will have to cancel your Indian passport at the nearest Indian Embassy. You will be given a letter stating that you have given up your Indian citizenship which you will have to attach with the required documents when applying for the OCI card. Apply for the OCI card through on line. Fill the OCI form with correct details (take two copies of it) and present it to the Indian embassy official. once it is accepted you will be given a receipt and may be between 45 – 60 days or veven less or more you will receive a call to come and take your OCI card.
Hope it explans your question? Good Luck.

    Mr. Matt,
You are not clear with your query but as far as I understand you say that your parents birth and marriage are registered.
    1. Do you have the original assento de nascimento and casamento of your parents?
    2. Have you registered your birth in Portugal?
If yes, do you have the original assento de nascimento to proceed to register for the BI?
If no, how can you apply for the BI if you do not have a proof to show that you a Portuguese.
    3. If your documents are issued in Goa, India then you will have to get the work done only in Goa and NOT outside India.
    4. Please refer to all previous comments of mine and you will get a clear picture as to how to go about getting your work done.
    5. Hope your query is answered. Good Luck.

  147. Hi Domnic,

I have been reading through your posts and have some questions.

I was born in Abu-Dhabi, but now reside in Goa. My birth was not registered in Goa at any time. I have my parent’s birth and marriage registered in Portugal and now i want to put my birth for registration. Will I need to travel to Abu-Dhabi to submit my documents or would it be better to contact a lawyer in Portugal to assist me?

  148. Domnic Savio Viegas

    October 9, 2012 — 7:20 am

    Hi Tony,
You will have to ask someone in Abu Dhabi to get a fresh original birth certificate and do the needful. Even if you had to register your birth in Goa you still need an original fresh birth certificate from Abu Dhabi. A lawyer from Portugal will also ask you to do the same as I mentioned. You will have to get the freshly issued birth certificate from Ministry of Health in UAE, attest it at the UAE Foreign Ministry and give it to the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi for translation and attestation. You can then carry on with your work through the Portuguese Consulate in Goa

  149. Hi Domnic,

Thanks for all your posts. they have been very helpful. I have some questions.
    1) I have my original assento de nascimento, is it possible to apply for my BI and register my marriage at the same time? Or in case I apply for my BI before registering my marriage what is the additional process I would have to go through to get my sons birth registered?
    2) Do they keep our passports for the process?
    3) The certificates I have are in Arabic and attested by foreign affairs, can i take these to the embassy in Abu Dhabi to get them translated to Portuguese?

  150. Vercil Piedade Rodrigues

    October 13, 2012 — 10:35 pm

I have my BI in my hand, and i want to apply for Portuguese passport, what do i need to do?

  151. Vercil,
Where are you residing at the moment? Depending on your answer I can reply.

  152. Mr. Pio,
    1. I would highly recommend you to register your marriage first and then apply for the BI. Once your marriage is registered in Portugal and you get the original assento de casamento you can go forward to apply your children’s birth so register your marriage first.
    2. You can apply for the BI before marriage but in your BI it will be mentioned that you are single.
    3. No passports are kept
    4. You can take the documents to the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi for translation and attestation as you have done the important attestation at the Foreign Affairs.
    Hope you got the answers

I have done all my procedures Goa….. and I have my original Assento De Nascimento with me.

Can i have my BI collected from abu dhabi? and what are the requirements to do so.

    Thanks, Morgan.

  156. Hi Morgan,
Are you married? If married register your marriage first and if not married please refer to older comments of mine during the month of August. A clear expalnation is given.

  157. Hi Domnic,

    1) I have my original assento de nascimento, is it possible to apply for my BI at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi as I live in Bahrain which would save me a trip to Portugal.
    Thank you for your reply

  158. Hi Angela,
Yes, it is possible to apply for your BI at the Portuguese Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
How to get it done please refer to my old comment of August 2012.
You will have to make two trips, one for applying and the other for collection (after may be 2 months).

citizen. so while surrendering the Indian passport all
these trips are calculated .any other misc. service done on
Indian Passport is also fined at the same rate.

  160. Hi Domnic
the fine is US $ 250/- Per trip. not 125 as i said above.

  161. Hi Domnic,

All your posts have been very informative & helpful. I have few questions.

    1) My husband who has received his original assento de nascimento, is planning to register our marriage at the Portuguese embassy in Abu Dhabi before applying for his BI. At the time of registering, does both husband & wife have to be present at the embassy?

    2) I understand only after our marriage is registered, we can register our son’s birth, right? So how long does marriage registration take? What are the fees to register the marriage?

    3) At the time of our son’s birth registration, is the presence of our child required at the embassy or can the father do the procedure for him?

    Thanks

  162. Hi Merlyn,
    My answers
    1. Firstly, where did you get married? In India or outside India? If in India then you will have to get the documents attested in India at the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate in New Delhi/Goa.
The documents must be translated and attested at the various Indian Govt. offices first and then present them to the Portuguese Mission for attestation. Then you can either send them to Portugal through the Portuguese Embassy/Consulate, going personally to Portugal or through a lawyer (need a lawyer I can give one).
Marriages are registered in Portugal and not at the Embassies/Consulates.
No need for both to be present as long as the documents are in order. Either one can go but they ask for the original
passport of the spouse (ie yours Merlyn to check if your husband and parents names are correct as per your birth certificate).
    2. Yes, your marriage has to be registered first as you will be registered as a spouse and your child will be a legal child as per the documents but make sure all the contents like name spellings and dates are correct.
Regarding the fees it depends how you want to get the work done, through Embassy/Consulate, personally or lawyer. Which ever way is good for you.
How long it takes – I can’t say but for sure the work will be done soon as the main document is already registered (your husband’s birth). A lawyer can get the work done faster as long as the required fees are paid.
    3. Your child is not required to be present personally but orignal documents are needed as I said in the No. 1 in your case (passport and birth certificate). It is easier to get a minor child’s birth registered once father/mother birth and their marriage are registered and the BI for a minor child (below 18) is free of cost. Where was your child born? If outside India, it is excellent and easier.

  163. Hi Merlyn,
I mean to say as stated above
(ie yours Merlyn to check if your husband’s name in your marriage certificate and his assento de nascimento are correct and parents names are correct as per your birth certificate).

  164. Guys,

Now your favorite sparkling water PEDRAS from Portugal is available in UAE, if any one required kindly ask me.

    Dear Domnic,
Thanks for quick reply. I am from Goa and got my birth registered in Portugal last month through a lawyer from Goa.

  170. Dear Domnic,

Hope you can help me, i reside in kuwait, i got my BI. i want to go to abudhabi to apply for my portuguese passport. can u tell wat is the procedure and the fees and can i collect the passport same day or the embassy can mail it to me in kuwait?

  171. I would like to know some details regarding obtaining a Portuguese passport and how do I start the process.
My husband is an Goan born and brought up in Bombay. His grand parents are from Goa.We managed to get their birth and marriage certificate from the church, but unable to find the civil one. can the church certificate be attested from the court, will that help. I asked couple of agents they say they need the civil certificate, otherwise they cannot do anything.
    please advice.

  172. Hey Domnic,
Thank you for your support and your answers to all the queries. It is very useful to many who can process their papers here in Abu Dhabi. Could you please advise how much time it would take to register the birth via AUH Portuguese embassy as I have submitted my daughters papers over there. Just for info, the embassy did not look at the Original marriage certificate (only a copy was given). Thanks

  173. Hi Lucy,
Thanks! How long it takes through the Embassy I do not know but through a lawyer in Portugal i got it done within 45 days for my 2 boys. It is up to them if they want to check the original as outside India fraud cases are very rare as compared to home. Wish you all the best and Adeus.

  174. I am based in Mumbal and I got my assento de nascimento from portugal. The Goan consulate takes 6 to 7 months for getting a BI appointment. Can I visit Abudhabi or any other Gulf country to get it done faster and how long will it take and what documents are required.
    Thanks, Ivena.

  175. Hi Ivena Coutinho,
You cannot apply for the BI outside India if you are residing in India. You can either go to the Portuguese Consulate in Goa or Embassy in Delhi.
You can only apply in a foreign country if you have a resident permit of that country or countries under the juridiction of that Embassy like Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. You cannot apply if you are a visitor to one of these countries as they check the residence permit. You have to make two trips to the embassy for applying and collection after 45 – 60 days.
Since you have your assento de nascimento why don’t you fly to Portugal on schengen visa and get all your documents ready in hand like Billette, ID chip card and passport. That is better if you are in a hurry.
You need only the assento de nascimento original certificate and in person you ahev to be there as they will take your finger prints and height. Also 2 photos are needed along with the fees.

  176. I am working in abu dhabi and married to Phillipino national ,having four children my children are holding phillipinees pasport, they were all born in Abu dhabi. I have submited all the required papers of my mom to apply for Bilhete de Identidade to one agent in goa. once her BI wiil come what are the requiremnets for me and my children to apply for portuguese passport.

  177. Dear Dominic
Thank your very much for your very informative reply. My application for visa has been rejected after paying the fees and the reason they said that my assento had been already made and I cannot apply for visa on the Indian passport but proceed to apply for BI in Goa and the waiting period is 6-8 months. So I cannot go to Portugal on Schengen. I live in Mumbai and the Portuguese consulate covering my region is Goa.

  178. Hi Ivena,
Sorry to hear that. Once your birth is registered in Portugal you are a Portuguese national so you have to start applying for the BI and Passport. it will take time as there are many in line to get their work done so have patience and apply for the BI. All the Best

  179. Hi Agustino,
Are you the father or mother of the 4 children? As per information if father then the children should hold the father’s nationality and not mother’s.

  180. Dear Domnic,
I am a Goan, born and settled in Goa
I have my mother’s file registered in Portal through a lawyer long time ago, after that there was no process done due to the lawyers demise and my mother also passed away.

Please advise if i could process my passport thorugh her file reference.

    Thanks for your valuable time/reply.

  181. Dear Domnic,

I have submited by daughters birth certificate for translation in portuguese, what is the other documents required when I go to Portuguese embassy for attestion of this birth certificate of my children.

  182. Fiel,
What file are you talking about that has been registered long time ago of your mother’s? Please use the correct document name (birth, marraige or death) that is registered in Portugal.

  183. Agustino,
For what purpose are you getting your daughters birth certificates translated and attested?

  184. Dear Domnic,

My Mon’s papers are in process for BI and the lawyer back home in goa has asked me to translate and attest the birth certifacte of my daughters in portuguese embassy in Abu Dhabi as they are born here. that is the reason i asked you what is the other documents required when I go to Portuguese embassy for attestion of this birth certificate of my children. I have the translation of the birth certificate ready in portuguese. please advice.

    Thanks once agin.

  185. Agustino,
Have you got your birth and marriage registered in Portugal?
    a) If yes, do you have the original assento de nascimento and casamento (your birth and marriage certificates in Portuguese)
    b) If no, how can the lawyer in Goa ask you to get your children’s birth certificates first
Just clarify this, please then only I can guide you.

  186. Hi Ivena,

When your Birth is registered i.e. you receive the Assento de Nascimento Number – you become Portuguese. Since the wait times in Goa is much higher than any other Portuguese Consulate in the world, it is advisable to apply for your citizen card & passport directly from Lisbon, Portugal by going there in person. Apply for a Schengen Visa from the Spanish Consulate on the basis that your travelling to Spain for a holiday. They issue three months visa which entitles you to travel anywhere in Europe. First land in Spain & then travel to Lisbon after a day.

  187. hi
I recently got my portuguese nationality from abu dhabi. Unfortunately i did not register my marriage before that. Now i have cancelled my work permit although im still in dubai on a tourist visa. My wife works here in dubai and has a residence visa. Can i still process the marriage registration papers from abu dhabi or will i have to go personally to portugal now. or maybe if not possible to process from here then can i atleast get the marriage and my wifes birth certificate attested from here.
    thanks

  188. HI,
I wish to register my marriage after getting my B.I. in abu dhabi. Please tell me any agent /lawyer who can do translation job and help in registering process in Abu Dhabi.

    Thanks

  189. Hi There,

Could you please help me with the below.

My father – based in Goa has just collected his B.I , and simultaneously his marriage is being registered in Portugal (marriage registration process not concluded)

I was born in Dubai, and i now live in England. How could i proceed further.

    Thank you
    Colaco

  190. Advice needed please. My grandparents were born and married during portuguese rule in goa, their documents are all in portuguese, my father had a portuguese passport but had to surrender it in tanzania to the indian embassy for an indian passport as all portuguese had to leave immediately and he had family and finance based in tanzania, he deeply regrets having given up his portuguese identity, he still retains the I.D card however. He has four adult children and we wish to apply for portuguese passports, is there a possibility at all for us? …….please contact on fenfernas@hotmail.com….Many thanks for any advice.

  191. Hi Colaco,

    once marriage registration is concluded,
you will be able to apply for yourself thru the Portuguese embassy in UK. The important document is your birth certificate from Dubai, attested by local ministry of foreign affairs and then authenticated/translated by embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi.

I got my BI thru portuguese consulate Goa. Now I want

to apply passport. I am in Bahrain how can apply

portuguese passport in this region .Or any other region

such as Abu Dhabi or else. Please guide me how to apply

and what documents required to process.

  193. Domnick Rodrigues,
    You either
Travel to Portugal and get your Passport as well as your Portuguese Smart Card (like Bahrain’s CPR). Apply for the visa at the French Embassy with all the relevant documents
OR you will have to travel to Abu Dhabi twice. One for applying and the other for collection but the smart card is not done in Abu Dhabi.
    What suits your budget?

    Dear Domnic,

I am a resident of Bahrain and was looking forward to applying for my BI since I recently got my birth done. Unfortunately however, I was told by the embassy that Bahrain no longer falls under their jurisdiction and that I would have to apply at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Problem with that being the Saudi Arabian embassy does not provide visit visa provisions and that puts me in predicament.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  195. Xavier Fernandes

    January 13, 2013 — 8:59 am

Apologies , failed to mention the embassy I contacted was the Portuguese embassy in Abu dhabi.

  196. Mr. Xavier,
Me too was told by the Portuguese Embassy employee in Abu Dhabi to get the BI, Smart Card and Passport done through Riyadh but I was fortunate that I flew to Abu Dhabi (August 2011) after getting a confirmation reply from one of the Portuguese Embassy official as he had agreed to accept my application for the BI ( I had carried the e-mail reply). Now that you are told to approach Riyadh you will have to e-mail them about your case.
I would suggest you to fly to Portugal and get all your work done within days if it is possible instead of making several trips for applying and collecting for each work.
You presence is needed all the time to get your picture and finger prints.

Thanks Domnic. I reckon the trip to Portugal would be a more convenient affair but not so much economical. Will try requesting the embassy at Abu Dhabi to make an exception (again) if possible, else will resort to The Portugal alternative.

  210. Dear Domnic,

I checked with Abu dhabi embassy about our marriage registration for which they asked me to transfer Euros 120 to portugal embassy & provide them bank confirmation slip while submitting registration documents.

I wanted to confirm with portugal embassy either in Abu dhabi or in Portugal if I make this tranfer from a money exchange or only through my bank? Exchange provides instant receipt of transfer whereas bank provides the same in 10 days.

I am not able to reach either of the embassies to confirm this & i m travelling to Abu dhabi for the same purpose after 5 days. Can you please let me know if the bank confirmation slip is the same as receipt of transfer, & either of it is acceptable?

    Thanks

    Mr. Nazareth,
First, let me make it clear to you and to all those who are reading “I AM ISSA” – I am not an expert nor a Portuguese Govt. representative to give certain information on the process. I just happen to be like anyone who did all the home work and got the Portuguese Citizenship. You should hire a lawyer in Portugal and get your work done and the lawyer will be more useful to you. I was just sharing my experience in regard to how I got my work done. If it was of some help to some – good and if not then something is missing in your process so I recommend approach a lawyer and do the needful.
    Have a nice day!

  222. Hi everyone,
This blog is very informational and helpful. I have come across some messages where people are providing free / paid advice on the procedures on this site. How genuine are they with respect to providing them with our personal information. Can anyone advice whether we can go ahead with some particular persons / agencies or are the lawyers in Goa, Dubai better. What will be the approx cost involved in getting the Portuguese passport where parents are goan born during portuguese rule while I was born later.

  223. When I apply for the Portugues passport what local address do I provide on the passport since I am staying in Goa.

    Dear Mr. Issa,

At the outset, thankyou for the useful information that you’ve been providing.
I have received Bilhete De Identidade (BI) from Republica Portuguesa way back in 2009. I have now decided surrender my indian passport and get the portuguese passport. I am presently working in muscat. can you please let me know the procedure to obtain the portuguese passport and to get the OCI in Abu Dhabi since i do not want to travel to portugal to complete these formalities.
Awaiting your reply. once again thankyou so much.

    Mr. Fernandes,
Take your BI, original assento de nascimento (original Portuguese birth certificate), Indian passport, few photos, money. Travel to Abu Dhabi and apply for the Passport. In a week to 10 days you will get the passport – personally or through courier that you will have to find out from the Portuguese Embassy. The Embassy will provide you with 2 letters – one for the Oman Govt. to transfer your Residence Permit from Indian passport to Portuguese passport and the other letter for the Indian Embassy informing them that you have been issued a Portuguese passport (ask for it if they do not issue).
First transfer your residence permit when you go back to Oman. Then go to the Indian embassy and surrender your Indian passport for cancellation along with the letter from the Portuguese Embassy and copies of the two passports. After a week or so the Indian embassy will issue you a letter and the cancelled Indian passport.
You will have to apply for the OCI in Oman itself as you are a resident there. Fill the OCI form through the website as per your Portuguese Passport contents and take 2 copies of the filled form. Submit the two copies then to the Embassy along with all original and copies of documents like Portuguese and Indian passports, letters from the Portuguese and Indian Embassies, photos, money. After 45 to 60 days you will be issued the OCI card (or may be earlier).
Hope my explanation is clear. Have a nice day!

    Dear Domnic,

Thankyou so much for the information.

I called the portuguese consulate in Abu Dhabi, they informed me that Muscat does not come under the jurisdiction of Abu Dhabi consulate hence residents of muscat cannot apply for a portuguese passport in Abu Dhabi. he said to find out either in Qatar or Saudi. kindly please help me to find out whether we can apply for a passport in Abu Dhabi. if not then which GCC country.

Secondly, i have got a new job in muscat hence i want to cancel my present visa, leave the country, collect my portuguese passport and then enter muscat on a new visa stamped on the portuguese passport. can you please let me know what is the correct procedure in this case.

Awaiting your reply. once again thankyou so much for the wonderful piece of information.

    Fernandes.

  227. Mr. Fernandes,
If Muscat does not come under Abu Dhabi then it will be Saudi Arabia. Call 0096614826964.
If you cancel your present visa then you will not be able to enter any of the GCC countries. Only people with valid RP are allowed. You should get your Portuguese Passport first and then do the needful in Oman itself as I wrote last time. Do not rush into doing things all at one time.

  228. Mr. Fernandes

    May 9, 2013 — 10:45 am

    Dear Domnic,

Suppose i take a schengen visa here in Oman instead of going to any GCC, cancel the present work visa and move to portugal, collect my portuguese passport in portugal and then send the new portuguese passport copies to my sponsor in oman to get the visa. is it possible?

    Fernandes

  229. Mr. Fernandes,
You can. That is what everyone is doing. Make sure at the time of applying for schengen visa attach copies of your birth and BI to make it easier for approval. I think French Embassy accepts visa application for Portugal. Just check. You can also collect the passport and travel back on Indian passport and do the cancellation of Indian passport, transfer of visa and OCI in Oman.

  230. Dear Domnic,

Thankyou so much for the information. i really appreciate your great efforts in helping the people to do the procedure correctly.

    May God bless you always.

    Dear Mr.ISSA,

It was quite nice of you to start this blog, Please if you dont mind helping me some queries which shall be useful for my process of obataining the Passport,

I am residing in Kuwait basically from India.
I have got my BI (Bilhete de Identidade) issued from the Portuguese Consulate in Goa. I would like to obtain my Portuguese passport and hence would very much appreciate any help\advice on my queries.

    1. Since I have collected my BI from Goa, can I approach the Portuguese Consulate in AbuDhabi to obtain my Portuguese passport?
    2. Do I have to take a prior appointment from the Consulate in AbuDhabi for the
    Passport?
3.Do I have to travel in person to AbuDhabi or can be done thru e-mailing and courier?

    Thank You in advance.
    God Bless.

  235. @N. Figueiredo
1 -Yes , you can. I know of someone who has got their BI from Goa and applied/obtained their Port passport from the Consulate at Abu Dhabi
2- Yes you will have to take an appointment with them prior travelling.
3- Yes you will have to travel to AbuDhabi in person as they will require you for your fingerprints and an on-the spot photo through their biometric system which they will then send to Lisbon,Portugal who in turn will courier the issued passport to Abu Dhabi which normally takes between 5-10 days. You can then authorize someone to collect the passport on your behalf or use DHL’s passport delivery pack which will be delivered to you in Kuwait for a fee of KD 25/-

On that note , if you intend surrendering your Indian passport and transferring your Kuwait work residence onto your Portuguese passport , you will also need an NOC from the Consulate in Abu Dhabi which will need to be attested by Foreign affairs UAE. You will have to make your own arrangements to have them attested though.

  237. Dear All,
All these threads have been quite informative.

  238. Dear All,
Can someone tell me how to apply for BI in Portuguese consulate in Abu-Dhabi? The requirement, photos size etc.

    Thanks

    PJF

  239. @Paulo J Fernandes
For the BI in Abu Dhabi , you will need to show them your 1- Original assento de nasimento (birth certificate)
    2 – Indian passport
3 – residency page on your Indian passport
You will need to take a photocopy of each of the above as this is required for submission along with your application. On the application you will be asked to fill your personal information and hand over 3 photographs 4cmsx3cms in size with white background.
They will take your thumb prints along with your signature on the application form and on the card which you will receive between 45-60 days.
The charges for BI is approx 43.5 Dirhams.

    Regards,

    Ced

  240. @Ced
Thanks for the reply. Now can you tell me if they will check the last page of my Indian Passport, as my mother’s name is wrong in there but I have a Divergency certificate.

    Thanks.

  241. @Paulo J Fernandes

Yes , they do check the last page of your Indian passport as both your mother and your father’s names are required to be mentioned on the backside of your Bilheite under the “Pais” section which is “Parents”.

I reckon you should not face issues with the name since you hold a divergence certficate for the same , however your best bet is to reconfirm this with Abu Dhabi prior to you travelling there.

Have a look at a sample of the backside of the BI to give your a better idea of the information required on the BI.

  242. @Ced,
Once again many thanks for the advise.

  243. Hello,

I hope I can get some answers from you all in Kuwait who have experiences with this .I have recently transferred my work permit of Kuwait to my Portuguese passport and have also issued a new civil id. On my driving license my nationality is Indian. Would I be subjected to go through the entire process of going through a driving license test now to change my nationality on my driving license or would they issue it with no problems whatsoever.

    Thanks in advance.

    Damien

  244. @CED
I got my assent de nascimento (birth ) registered and now plan to apply for BI. As informed earlier there a mistake in my mother’s name in my Indian passport. Infact it is quite a big mistake on our part. At the time of renewal I used her commonly used name instead of the name in the birth certificate. Now I don’t know how the agent got the assent. But now to apply for BI if they check the last page there will be problem or no. And can you explain to me how to get this corrected in Indian passport here in Dubai .Will appreciate your information on this.

    Thanks.

I am a Goan and had 2 queries on the process of obtaining a Portuguese passport. 1) Is it possible to get only my father’s birth and marriage registered and then directly proceed with registering my birth and marraige in Portugal. Or does my father need to obtain his BI before I apply for my birth registration and BI. 2) My father is now based in Bombay while I am based in UAE. Can I apply for his birth and marriage registration in Abu Dhabi

  255. Hello,
Iam basically from goa presently working in UAE.
I have a small enquiry related to Portuguese passport.
I have applied for my mother’s birth through the lawyer based in goa and it is under process. After acquiring my mother’s birth is it possible that I could travel to Portugal and get their marriage and complete my process also. Is it true that the process is done faster and the fees are also less comparatively if directly applied in portugal.
I would really appreciate if somebody could guide me
    Thanks and god bless!!!
    Regards,
    Trina

  256. Trina,

you can do it in Portugal but how long do you intend to stay there
to complete the two processes which are handled by two different offices.
Alternatively, you can do it yourself sitting at home provided you have in order the required documentation and attested by the involved Portuguese consulates.

  283. hello all portugese nationality aspirants. The cost in portugal with portugese lawyers is 1000euros for birth registration and 500 euros for marriage registration. For birth registration they give a time of about 4 months for those born before 1961, and if your parents are already resgistered than it is 1 month. The marriage takes about 1 month…

I hope it helps….google it ….you can find couple of portugese agencies on the net. Email them and get more info…
